WILL YOU PASS THE SALT?
2021
Installation: Relational art, vibrotactile transducers, sound files, table, chairs, carpet, recycled kitchenware, cushions, masala chai spices, computer, amplifier, sound card
Will you Pass the Salt? is a multisensory installation created for the PHI Residency program in the summer of 2021. I invited 10 different households in Montréal to contribute sounds of them preparing and sharing a meal together. over 14 hours of recordings were transformed to play back through a dining table fitted with upcycled kitchenware that was found through visiting multiple thrift shops in Montréal.
The piece is a response to social isolation and the strangeness of the resocialization process associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. A feeling of nostalgia for small, intimate, everyday moments shared with strangers is evoked. The soundscape is completely unpredictable, though sounds may seem familiar, no experience is ever the same.
Created with the support of the PHI Foundation in Montréal, Québec, for an end-of-residency group exhibition curated by Daniel Fiset: "...and room in a bag of stars", inspired by Ursula le Guin and the carrier bag theory of fiction.
